White Stag
Perched above Lake Wakatipu, this Queenstown residence is conceived as a quiet, grounded response to an extraordinary alpine setting. The home is carefully embedded into it’s sloping site, presenting a low, linear profile that defers to the surrounding mountains while framing expansive views across the lake and township below. A restrained material palette of dark-stained cedar cladding and natural textures allows the building to recede into the landscape, particularly at dusk when the house becomes a warm, lantern-like presence against the hillside.
Internally, the dwelling is organised around a series of open-plan living spaces that prioritise connection to the outdoors. Floor to ceiling glazing and deep overhangs extend living areas onto sheltered terraces, creating a seamless indoor-outdoor experience suited to Queenstown’s seasonal climate. The kitchen and dining areas act as social anchors, positioned to capture both morning light and long evening views, while private zones are more enclosed, offering retreat and thermal comfort.
The design balances permanence and lightness, robust in its response to climate and terrain, yet refined in its detailing and spatial clarity. The result is a contemporary alpine home that enhances everyday living through its relationship with landscape, light, and outlook.
